It doesn’t matter if this is your first round of golf or you’ve been playing for years, we’ve all had a ridiculous golf swing tempo at one point in time or another. Usually in our initial stages there is something about the connection between having a faster tempo means we’ll hit farther. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, and it’s a lot more complex of a discussion.

What it comes down to is you have to have every part of your swing in sync for it to be a truly successful one. So it’s important to understand no matter how good your stance, backswing, downswing, or follow through are, if you don’t have the right golf swing tempo, it’s all for nothing. Here are a few helpful hints you can utilize to have a successful one.

Don’t Hit the Ball, Drive Through It

One of the most important golf lessons you will ever learn is why it’s crucial to hit through a golf ball. Whenever we hear someone say, “Hit the ball,” the reply is usually; “Why? You’re supposed to drive THROUGH the ball.” It’s definitely a frustrating correction to many, but that’s only because many golfers don’t understand the difference.

Keep in mind this is also known as your follow through. The reason this is so important is because if you stop at impact, the ball will have a shorter flight, and less control. So when you’re looking into your golf swing tempo, make sure it is consistent every time. The best way to get it down is by heading to your local driving range and hitting a few buckets of balls.

The Glue

We could explain the golf swing tempo on many different levels, but the easiest way to understand it is by thinking of it as the glue to your swing. In order to build the perfect swing, your count from start to finish needs to be in sync with everything else. If you haven’t heard of “the count,” it’s simply a way to make sure your tempo is fluent at each part of the swing.

However, this is a little misleading, because it shouldn’t be something you do in your head or out loud. It should become second nature, which will definitely take practice. The best thing to do is to go out and purchase a golf swing tempo device, and use it while you’re at the range. Eventually it will be like tying your shoes, where you aren’t really thinking about it.

Different Clubs Means Different Tempos

Okay, while we could sit here and write about there being one specific golf swing tempo, it wouldn’t be true. One thing to understand is that you have different weights of clubs, different clothes each time out, and basically a different body. While we still recommend a timing device to help, you are going to have to do this with each and every club.
